The Future Starts Today, Not Tomorrow

During this past week in ISM, I created my research showcase invitation, continued updating my portfolios, and began entering information in my mentor log. Additionally, I started researching my original work topic- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or, SIDS.

Alongside that, I discussed my original work topic with my mentor and she gave me an amazing idea: conduct product reviews on popular sleeping items for children that parents tend to buy solely based on the reviews, not the safety. That way, instead of spewing facts and creating something potentially not impactful, I could incorporate informing parents about SIDS with an applicable and realistic touch. Moreso, pediatricians’ offices typically carry instructions on how to prevent SIDS but do not provide literal product recommendations unless specifically requested, so Dr. Dickschat loved my idea of having two separate pamphlets, one for the doctor’s office and one for the parents.

Furthermore, these past few mentor visits I have been fortunate enough to experience a greater amount of nurser visits and check-ups on newborns. Rather than solely focusing on patients within in the clinic, I have been able to observe a wide variety of cases and situations inside and outside the clinic and of all ages. I hope to continue engaging in unique cases and I am extremely grateful for my mentor and for her providing me with these opportunities.

In conclusion, acquiring knowledge is more about the long-term than the short-term and it involves active learning and a growth mindset. Determined to succeed, I know that I can apply all of my knowledge in a holistic manner by the time final presentation night rolls around.
